A new international milestone in Serbia

FS Engineering’s expertise supporting global mobility

FS Engineering, together with Project Biro Utiber d.o.o. and Utiber Közúti Beruházó Kft., has been awarded the contract for the Spatial Plan, Feasibility and Preliminary Design of the Ruma – Šabac – Donja Borina Junction – State Border railway line modernization in Serbia.

The project concerns a single-track, non-electrified line of approximately 110 km serving both passenger and freight traffic, including 12 stations, 4 junctions, 17 bridges and 4 tunnels. It is part of the Serbia Railway Sector Modernization (SRSM) Program, which aims to enhance the efficiency and safety of existing railway assets while strengthening governance and institutional capacity within the Serbian railway sector.

The Program is financed by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), and is managed by the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure (MoCTI) through the Project Implementation Unit (PIU), with Serbian Railways Infrastructure (SRI) acting as Beneficiary.

The Spatial Plan, Feasibility Study and Preliminary Design for the Ruma – Šabac – Donja Borina Junction – State Border railway line represent Phase 1 of the Program. The line is a key infrastructure asset, as it connects railway corridors between Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina and forms part of the indicative extension of the TEN-T Comprehensive Network to the Western Balkans, known as Route 9A, running from Novi Grad in Bosnia-Herzegovina to Ruma in Serbia.

The scope of the assignment aims to refurbish and modernize the line, to meet modern transport requirements. It includes the preparation of all relevant technical and planning documentation.

Together with its partners, FS Engineering will support MoCTI in enabling more sustainable mobility and contributing to economic growth in the country and the wider region, helping set new standards for both passenger and freight rail transport.

This further achievement allows FS Engineering to consolidate its presence in the Serbian market, where it has supported local Clients and Communities delivering main iconic Projects since the early 2000s, also through its Serbian-registered subsidiary, IES (Infrastructure Engineering Services d.o.o.), established in 2012 in Belgrade. This move aligns with the strategic guidelines of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group's industrial plan, and FS Engineering corporate plan, which positions FS Engineering as a driver of Italian high-tech engineering worldwide.
