Catania-Palermo Line: Handover of the Site for Lot 4A of the Project

FS Engineering starts engineering work for the construction of the new rail infrastructure

Caltanissetta, June 22, 2026

From integrated design to advanced site management, FS Engineering is leading the execution of one of the most complex segments of this key rail corridor for Sicily.

Following the formal handover of the site by the infrastructure manager Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), construction of Lot 4A of the new Palermo-Catania-Messina railway link is now fully under way, covering the section between Caltanissetta Xirbi and the future Nuova Enna station. This marks a decisive milestone in the comprehensive upgrading and modernisation of Sicily’s rail network, signalling the operational launch of one of the most structurally demanding engineering projects along the entire high-capacity route.

FS Engineering plays a central role in the project, deploying advanced engineering expertise to guarantee quality assurance, operational efficiency, and rigorous control across all construction phases. Through project management and the use of advanced digital tools, the Company maintains continuous site oversight, driving the integrated management of a project defined by its high technical and organisational complexity.

Lot 4A involves the construction of approximately 27 kilometres of new alignment that deviates completely from the legacy track layout. The geomorphological profile of the terrain makes the project exceptionally challenging: approximately 20 kilometres of the route run underground, requiring extensive tunnelling works executed almost entirely via TBMs, supplemented by the construction of major viaduct structures and station infrastructure upgrades.

FS Engineering is deploying a digital site management model driven by the integration of BIM (Building Information Modelling) protocols. By digitising and streaming real-time field data, the Project Management Team can continuously monitor the geometric, structural, and quantitative parameters of the works, thereby optimising stakeholder coordination and minimising the risk of unforeseen events or design changes during construction.

This approach allows for the seamless coordination of all stakeholders, optimising schedules, cost controls, and work quality. The digitisation of the construction workflows yields enhanced predictive capabilities and control—both of which are critical elements for delivering strategic infrastructure within the complex environmental conditions of the Sicilian hinterland.

Lot 4A constitutes one of the most critical interventions along the entire Palermo-Catania-Messina corridor, a strategic link within the European TEN-T Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridors. The infrastructure will deliver a decisive enhancement to regional accessibility and modal connectivity, slashing rail travel times between Palermo and Catania to approximately two hours.

Beyond optimising passenger and freight mobility, the project yields substantial environmental dividends. By enabling a significant modal shift from road to rail, it will reduce CO₂ emissions, driving the transition toward a highly sustainable and energy-efficient transportation network.

The mobilisation of Lot 4A thus marks a concrete milestone in the deployment of infrastructure designed to transform the entire transportation network of Sicily.

Throughout this transformation, FS Engineering continues to strengthen its leading role in the evolution of railway engineering, driving an operational approach increasingly centred on innovation, digitalisation, and sustainability.
