As part of our market diversification strategy, we have built up solid expertise in the design of mass transit systems, characterised by a high level of integration between the various subsystems and highly innovative technological solutions.
Thanks to the development of a comprehensive network of industry partnerships, ongoing monitoring of the relevant regulatory framework, and the application of our established railway engineering expertise, we manage complex, multidisciplinary projects. We deliver comprehensive designs for tram and light rail systems, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) networks, and metro systems.
Our design philosophy is anchored in a thorough appraisal of the local urban and geographical context in which the infrastructure is situated. This ensures the identification of the most appropriate engineering solutions and delivers effective multimodal connectivity. Our proposals are engineered to achieve an optimal balance between network performance, technological innovation, and the long-term economic viability of the investment.
Following the incentives for mass transit systems set out in the first and second calls for proposals by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility (MIMS) and, subsequently, the funding allocated under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), numerous local authorities have seized the opportunity in recent years to launch initiatives for the development of new urban transport systems. In particular, there has been a strong momentum towards light infrastructure such as Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems – solutions capable of improving urban mobility through sustainable, rapid and high-impact interventions.
In this scenario, the Group—and FS Engineering in particular—has established a dedicated operational structure, with the aim of systematically managing a rapidly expanding sector and responding competently to the evolving needs of local authorities.
Confirming our strategic focus on this sector, significant contracts have been secured in recent years for projects receiving substantial funding, both under the NRRP framework and through funds made available by MIMS for schemes not included in the Plan. This commitment demonstrates our determination to make a tangible contribution to the development of modern, sustainable, and future-oriented urban mobility systems.
Leveraging extensive experience in the design and delivery of complex railway infrastructure, FS Engineering provides comprehensive Design Management, Systems Engineering, System Integration, and System Assurance services through dedicated in-house departments operating under a holistic, interdisciplinary framework.
These core capabilities are embedded within a mature, internationally recognised operational model and seamlessly deployed across complex cross-border and global projects. This approach ensures the commissioning of highly efficient, interoperable, and fully integrated rail systems, guaranteeing engineering quality, asset reliability, and operational success throughout the entire infrastructure lifecycle.
