Information Management has driven a genuine revolution in FS Engineering’s operational models. This profound transformation required the implementation of a structured change management programme, which was necessary to evolve workflows in line with growing regulatory and design complexities, all enabled by new digital tools.
To tackle this challenge, we have invested significantly in skills, introducing specialist professional roles capable of steering and supporting innovation. Alongside the standard industry roles—such as BIM Specialist, BIM Coordinator, BIM Manager, and CDE Manager—new digital positions dedicated to process standardisation, advanced technology integration, and big data management have emerged. These roles are now central elements in modern infrastructure design.

THE KEY PLAYERS IN DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

| BIM Manager: responsible for managing digital processes at company level, for both captive and non-captive market contracts; defines the rules, procedures and tools necessary to achieve the company’s strategic objectives. |
| CDE Manager: manages the information infrastructure, ensuring data accessibility, control and security within the ecosystem of digital platforms that form part of the company’s Common Data Environment (CDE). |
| BIM Specialist: creates, manages and updates models and information objects. This role often coincides with that of discipline-specific engineer, who integrates advanced digital skills to design within an advanced information ecosystem. |
| BIM Coordinator: coordinates information flows, ensures consistency, interoperability and data quality across the various discipline-specific models, and supports the BIM Manager in the operational and contractual supervision of the project. From initial activity planning through to execution, they ensure seamless process digitalisation and continuous dialogue between all stakeholders. |

AN ADVANCED STRUCTURE FOR COMPLEX PROJECTS: THE THREE SPECIALISED AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY OF THE BIM COORDINATOR

| Project BIM Coordinator: responsible for the integration and coordination of design activities for specific contracts, liaising constantly with the Project Manager, the client and the design team. This is an integrated role that combines information coordination skills with the typical responsibilities of a Project Engineer; from initial planning to final handover, it ensures the effective digitalisation of processes and constant dialogue between the design team, project management and the client. |
| Validation BIM Coordinator: focuses on validating the design (models/deliverables). Uses advanced digital methods and tools to optimise the validation activities, experimenting with implementations in code checking and clash detection operations. |
| Site BIM Coordinator: working directly on-site, supporting information management during the construction phase, this role is responsible for validating construction project information models and digitally managing technical and accounting processes on site, also by utilising 4D and 5D simulation models and tools. |
