FS Engineering does not merely keep pace with the infrastructural evolution of the railway network; it anticipates it. The company designs and delivers complex technological installations and systems to support rail operations, managing assets seamlessly from initial engineering phases right through to pre-commissioning.
This holistic approach ensures that every technological intervention forms part of a highly integrated strategy. The ultimate objective is to deliver a railway infrastructure that is demonstrably sustainable, innovative, efficient, and state-of-the-art.
This multi-disciplinary and integrated framework enables the business to manage the complexities inherent in major capital projects. By deploying these strategies, FS Engineering successfully enhances traffic capacity and delivers elevated levels of infrastructure performance and operational safety.
Concurrently, this model drives down operating and maintenance costs while improving overall network performance. Innovative digital methodologies and tools are embedded across all stages of the project lifecycle, from initial concept to final commissioning, creating an advanced engineering ecosystem engineered to shape the future of rail transport.
Operating as a market leader in the transport sector, FS Engineering draws its deep systems expertise from an extensive portfolio of successfully commissioned projects. This proven track record spans high-speed rail networks, conventional mainlines, and mass transit metro systems for both domestic and international clients. This breadth of experience ensures inherent asset resilience, robust safety systems, and full compliance with the highest global railway standards and regulatory frameworks.
Specifically, the company develops cutting-edge solutions across several critical technological systems:
POWER, ELECTRIC TRACTION AND GREEN ENERGY
The deployment of advanced technological solutions is fundamentally embedded within the design of the railway electrical system architecture. This scope extends from the initial high-voltage and medium-voltage grid connections through to the complex processes of power transformation and distribution. This infrastructure reliably serves both traction power networks and the auxiliary services critical to supporting daily railway operations. In this sector, a significant milestone has been achieved with the delivery of the first installations in Italy capable of powering rail operations using renewable energy generated by new photovoltaic power stations. Given the high energy consumption traditionally associated with running a rail network, this achievement represents a major step forward for the railway system in terms of sustainability and the energy transition, while delivering a substantial environmental benefit on a national scale.
SIGNALLING AND ERTMS
The deployment of innovative technologies is best demonstrated by the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) and European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2. First implemented in Europe on the Rome–Naples high-speed line, this technology has subsequently been rolled out across the entire Italian high-speed and high-capacity network. It represents an internationally recognised standard of excellence, which is now being deployed on major overseas infrastructure projects utilizing the latest-generation Baseline 3 and Baseline 4 specifications.
TELECOMMUNICATIONS
FS Engineering specialises in the design, delivery, and commissioning of telecommunications networks built to support critical railway operations, seamlessly managing the entire project lifecycle. The systems designed by the company form the core technological infrastructure required to ensure safe, continuous, and efficient network operations. This capability is delivered through robust fibre-optic backbones, SDH, DWDM, and IP/MPLS transmission systems, alongside the GSM-R mobile network and the next-generation Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRCMS).
CONTROL CENTRES
FS Engineering delivers central control centres for the comprehensive management of integrated technological systems (SCCM), ensuring the smooth operation of routes equipped with computer-based interlocking (ACCM) and ERTMS frameworks, alongside intelligent diagnostics and asset monitoring. Similarly, for traction power and lineside safety infrastructure in tunnels and stations, the company designs and commissions centralised supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. These platforms enable the seamless remote control and supervision of electric traction networks (DOTE) alongside the mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems serving stations and tunnels.
TESTING & COMMISSIONING
FS Engineering oversees the commissioning of innovative signalling systems, including computer-based interlocking (ACC/ACCM) and ERTMS frameworks. The company supports the entire process from initial design through to final commissioning by conducting rigorous software and documentation checks, alongside comprehensive laboratory and field testing to ensure strict compliance with global safety and reliability standards. To enhance this capability, advanced Control, Command and Signalling (CCS) simulation suites have been established. These facilities enable full integration testing of both on-board and trackside systems (ERTMS/ACCM) within a controlled environment prior to site commissioning.
