TRANS-MAGHREB RAILWAY LINE

Feasibility study for railway integration in the Maghreb region

FS Engineering, as lead partner of the consortium formed with the Tunisian company Comete International and the Algerian company Medevco, was awarded a contract by the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) to carry out a feasibility study on the rehabilitation and upgrading of the Trans-Maghreb railway line.

The Italian-Tunisian-Algerian consortium was selected following an international tender involving the leading engineering firms operating in the Maghreb region, confirming the team’s ability to combine expertise in railway design, in-depth knowledge of the local context, and the contribution of highly qualified specialists.

The project, funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB), involved defining strategic actions for the comprehensive upgrading of the Trans-Maghreb railway line along the Casablanca–Algiers–Tunis axis, as well as identifying the technical and planning measures necessary for implementing priority investments in the area.

A strategically important project for the entire region with the aim of creating an integrated rail network to support mobility in the Maghreb region, promote infrastructure interoperability, strengthen cross-border connections, and harmonise operations, with a focus on the project’s socio-economic aspects and its impact on the areas and communities concerned.

The total duration of the project was 9 months and was completed in 2018. 

AREAS OF INTEREST

The study analysed and defined the intervention measures for the following railway corridors and sections:

Morocco – Algeria 
Upgrading of the Fès–Oujda line (Morocco), covering a distance of 354 km 
Upgrading of the cross-border Oujda–Akid Abbas section (Morocco–Algeria), covering 17 km
Algeria – Tunisia 
Annaba–Jedeida cross-border section
Upgrading of the Souk Ahras–Jedeida line (via Ghardimaou), covering 245 km (this section is not the subject of a study for a new route) 
New high-speed line (V = 220 km/h) between El Tarf (Algeria, south of Annaba) and east of Jendouba (Tunisia), covering 110 km, in conjunction with the upgrading of the existing Jendouba–Jedeida line (150 km) 
New high-speed line (V = 220 km/h) between El Tarf (Algeria) and Tabarka (Tunisia), over a distance of 106 km
New high-speed line (V = 220 km/h) between Ain Sebaa and north of Béja, covering 37 km, in conjunction with the upgrading of the existing Tabarka–Ain Sebaa line in Tunisia
