ETCS SYSTEM (LEVEL 1) ALEXANDRIA–ASYUT–NAG HAMMADI

Upgrading and safety enhancement of the Egyptian railway network

Egypt has stepped up its commitment to modernising the national railways and developing transport infrastructure, with the aim of improving the safety, operational efficiency and regional connectivity of the network.

The Egyptian National Railways (ENR) has therefore engaged FS Engineering to carry out design work, provide technical assistance and prepare tender documents for implementing the ETCS Level 1 signalling system along the Alexandria–Asyut–Nag Hammadi railway corridor, covering a total length of 935 km.

The project covered the following sections:

Alexandria – Benha – Cairo (208 km)
Cairo – Beni Suef (125 km)
Beni Suef – Asyut (250 km)
Benha – Zagazig – El Ismailia – Port Said (190 km)
Asyut – Nag Hammadi (180 km)

The adoption of the ETCS Level 1 system will significantly improve the safety and reliability of rail operations and ensure the Egyptian network’s compliance with international engineering standards.

The project has been completed.
