BENHA–PORT SAID AND ZAGAZIG–ABU KEBIR
Upgrading of signalling systems and railway infrastructure
This contract represents a major success for FS Engineering, having been awarded following an international tender in which the company ranked first overall against other leading global rail engineering firms.
FS Engineering has been appointed by the Egyptian National Railways (ENR) to supervise the upgrading of the signalling systems and the renewal of track infrastructure along the Benha–Zagazig–Ismailia–Port Said and Zagazig–Abu Kebir lines.
The project, which spans approximately 214 km, involves 21 stations, a Traffic Control Centre (TCC) located in Zagazig and 40 equipment buildings, and represents one of the country’s major railway upgrading programmes. The project aims to significantly improve the safety, reliability, and efficiency of rail operations, helping to bring the infrastructure up to international standards and strengthen connections between the Nile Delta and the Suez Canal area.
The Benha–Port Said line, historically characterised by safety issues, is the subject of a comprehensive overhauling and upgrading programme aimed at significantly reducing the risk of accidents, increasing capacity and service frequency, and improving overall transport quality, with positive repercussions for the economic development of the areas concerned.
To date, 19 of the 21 planned stations have been commissioned, as have 18 of the 19 planned Object Controllers, including the Zagazig Traffic Control Centre, whilst work on preparing the station platforms is approximately 90 per cent complete. The completion of the works and the full commissioning of the systems are scheduled for December 2026.
