SARMIENTO URBAN RAIL LINE

A premier infrastructure project in South America

The Sarmiento Urban Rail Line represents one of the most important infrastructure projects delivered in Latin America, conceived to radically transform one of the most strategic railway axes within the Buenos Aires metropolitan area.

The project encompassed the complete undergrounding of the existing railway corridor along an approximately 37 km alignment, alongside the delivery of new underground stations, the construction of new maintenance facilities, and the upgrading of the legacy Sarmiento line. This integrated overhaul yields major benefits in terms of operational safety, network capacity, reliability, and urban integration.

FS Engineering acted as the Main Designer for the entire design process, assuming full responsibility for delivering the construction drawings and construction support activities of the new line. Due to its technical complexity, the volume of deliverables, and a total project duration of approximately five years, the initiative represents the most demanding scheme within the company’s international portfolio.

The contract was completed in 2019, consolidating FS Engineering's position as a trusted partner for the delivery of complex rail infrastructure within high-density, international metropolitan environments.

SCOPE OF FS ENGINEERING WORK
Construction of an 18 km single-bore rail tunnel excavated using a tunnel boring machine (TBM)
Delivery of 8 underground stations
Upgrading of sub-surface sections
Line electrification at 25 kV AC 50 Hz, including the construction of three traction substations
Implementation of signalling systems featuring national Automatic Train Stop (ATS) technology, with provision for future ETCS Level 2 integration
Complete overhaul of the permanent way and track form systems
Resolution of road and pedestrian interfaces to eliminate grade crossings
Construction of a new maintenance depot for the entire fleet of approximately 70 trains, alongside the modernization of the existing Castelar facility
Comprehensive management of mechanized excavation and TBM tunneling operations
