BOGOTA' METRO
This landmark transit project stands as one of the most prominent international mass public transport infrastructure projects currently underway
The project comprises the delivery of a high-capacity heavy metro passenger transport system, featuring a fully elevated alignment and fully automated, driverless operations. The infrastructure was conceived to address the growing urban mobility demands of the Colombian capital, providing a modern, efficient, and high-quality transit service.
Designed entirely on a viaduct structure running along existing highway corridors, the First Line of the Bogotá Metro (PLMB) will enable residents from south-western Bogotá to reach the city's historic centre and the northern commercial hub at Calle 72 and Avenida Caracas safely, reliably, and rapidly. The network will secure a high degree of intermodal integration, interfacing directly with existing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines, the Regiotram de Occidente regional rail link, and ultimately, the future Bogotá Metro Line 2.
The primary works delivered under the contract are divided into two macro-categories: civil works, and metrorail systems and rolling stock. Key project milestones include the detailed design and construction of the viaduct alignment, metro and BRT passenger stations, the stabling yard and maintenance depot (patio taller), and the Operational Control Centre (OCC). The scope also encompasses rolling stock manufacturing, metrorail systems installation, and the execution of individual and integrated commissioning tests preparatory to commercial launch.
Alongside the core rail infrastructure, the scheme includes significant complementary works spanning the entire 24 km alignment. These encompass major highway realignments, urban regeneration, and public realm enhancements to integrate the system into the cityscape.
Future expansion plans look to extend Line 1 northwards to Calle 100, adding a 3 km section to bring the total length of the line to 27 km.
Civil works are on track for completion in the autumn of 2027, with the metro system scheduled to enter commercial service in the spring of 2028. Final project close-out is anticipated in 2031.
