“FOLLO LINE” HIGH-SPEED PROJECT

In 2015, the Norwegian National Rail Administration (Jernbaneverket), the government agency responsible for managing the national rail network, awarded the Follo Line TBM EPC contract to the “Acciona Ghella Joint Venture” (AGJV) for design, procurement, and construction.

AGJV then appointed FS Engineering, operating in a joint venture with Lombardi SA (Switzerland), to conduct a comprehensive independent audit of the detailed design for the Follo Line – a new high-speed double-track railway line connecting Oslo Central Station with the town of Ski in the greater Follo region, engineered for operational speeds of up to 250 km/h.

Running through a twin-bore tunnel, across a 22-km stretch, the project is the longest underground rail line in Scandinavia. The scheme delivers a total of 64 kilometres of new track, substantially relieving traffic congestion in Oslo’s south-eastern suburbs, while also seamlessly integrating public transport links for the commuter towns surrounding the capital.

The works have been completed.

TECHNICAL FOCUS

Verification of design documents for the railway systems

Twin-bore railway tunnel, with each tube stretching approximately 19 km in length.
Intermediate underground rescue area, incorporating the TBM assembly chambers, rescue tunnels, and associated cross-passages at Åsland.
Interface management with the transmission system operators (TSOs) of the three participating countries, alongside the design for connecting traction substations to existing high-voltage lines (110 kV and 330 kV).
Two dedicated escape tunnels, each measuring approximately 3 km in length, and their associated cross-passage network.
Electromechanical equipment, encompassing tunnel ventilation and smoke extraction plant, airtight doors and the fire protection system.  
Railway systems infrastructure (excluding the signalling system).
