FS Engineering achieves a major success in the Balkans
Between 2012 and 2020, FS Engineering delivered a significant contribution to the renewal and upgrading of the Romanian railway network, executing engineering works on over 429 km of routes and driving the alignment of the country’s infrastructure with European interoperability standards.
FS Engineering delivered the feasibility study for the rehabilitation and partial doubling of the Craiova–Caransebeș railway line, a vital part of the Orient/East-Med Core Network Corridor, spanning a total length of approximately 230 km. The project envisages speeds of up to 160 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains.
The works included the implementation of the ERTMS Level 2 system and the construction of several tunnels, including the Balota tunnel, which is approximately 6 km long, thereby contributing to improved performance, safety and interoperability of the line, in accordance with European standards. The existing railway infrastructure was, in fact, characterised by poor maintenance and the presence of areas of instability and hydrogeological risks along the route.
The activities envisaged under the contract were successfully completed, reinforcing FS Engineering’s role as a key partner in railway infrastructure development programmes across the Balkans and Eastern Europe.
