CALAFAT-VIDIN BRIDGE

A strategic transport link across the Danube

The Calafat-Vidin Bridge, known as the New Europe Bridge, is a strategic road and rail link spanning the River Danube, connecting the towns of Calafat in Romania with Vidin in Bulgaria. The structure is approximately 2 km long, with a total width of 32 m, and features four road lanes and a railway deck, making it a high-capacity, multimodal infrastructure of international importance.

FS Engineering provided technical assistance and supervised the works during the construction phase, whilst also overseeing the necessary adjustments to the technical design to ensure compliance with functional, safety, and interoperability requirements. The bridge forms part of the Pan-European Transport Corridor linking the German city of Dresden to the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul, constituting a strategic hub for the continuity and integration of major European transport corridors and helping to strengthen links between Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe.
