BELGRADE–BAR RAILWAY LINE
FS Engineering operates in the Balkan region, playing a strategic role in the development of the Adriatic-Balkan Corridor, a key axis for strengthening links between south-eastern Europe and the Adriatic basin.
The Italian Ministry of Economic Development commissioned FS Engineering to deliver the technical and financial feasibility study for the refurbishment of the Belgrade–Bar railway line, an integral asset within the Bari–Belgrade–Timișoara multi-modal transport corridor (Corridor XI). The line connects the Serbian capital to the Montenegrin coast. Via maritime shipping links from the ports of Bari and Brindisi, it extends onward to Southern Italy, serving as a strategic bridge between the Southern Adriatic and the Danube region.
The project presented a significant opportunity to champion Italian engineering capability in the international transport sector, fostering capital investment and cross-border cooperation between Southern Italy and the Western Balkans while modernising a vital rail connection between Belgrade and Bar.
From an infrastructure perspective, the line has a total length of 454.8 km, configures as a single-track electrified route crossing Serbia (approximately 280 km), Montenegro (approximately 165 km) and, for a short stretch, Bosnia and Herzegovina (approximately 10 km). The route is designed for speeds ranging from 75 km/h to 120 km/h and features 52 stations and 41 stops, as well as particularly complex engineering structures, encompassing 252 tunnels for a combined length of 118 km, and 283 bridges and viaducts, for a total length of 15.6 km.
Work was completed in January 2011, consolidating FS Engineering’s contribution to the development of a strategic railway infrastructure for mobility and economic integration in the Adriatic-Baltic region.
