Technological innovation for the development of Europe’s first high-speed line

FS Engineering oversaw the implementation of the ERTMS system on the Rome–Florence high-speed line, one of Italy’s busiest national rail corridors. The project covered the Arezzo Sud–Orvieto Sud section (85 km) and completes the second technological upgrade of the line, which now spans a total of 240 km of double track.

The introduction of the ERTMS system, already in use on over 700 km of the high-speed network, enables improved performance, greater efficiency in traffic management, and a reduction in operating and maintenance costs.

The project was completed with the extension of the technology to the remaining sections as far as Settebagni, enabling centralised supervision of the entire line from the Central Control Centre in Bologna. The project ensures a significant improvement in the quality, punctuality, and reliability of the rail service.
