FS Engineering oversaw the site supervision of the new Naples Afragola Station, a strategic infrastructure serving the provinces north of Naples, as well as the areas of Caserta, Avellino, and Benevento. The station provides direct HS services to Rome and, via the north-south link, to Salerno and Reggio Calabria. Following the completion of the new Naples–Cancello–Frasso Telesino line, direct connections to Bari and Foggia are now fully operational. Once the wider network integration is completed—including its final interconnection with the Circumvesuviana network—this transit hub will serve a catchment area of around 3 million inhabitants across the Naples metropolitan area, reinforcing the station’s role as a key node in the regional and national transport system.

Naples Afragola Station represents far more than standard transport infrastructure; it is also a building of immense architectural and urban value. Designed by the visionary architect Zaha Hadid, winner of the international competition organised by Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, it stands out for its curved shapes that abstractly evoke the image of a speeding train. The building presents an extraordinary opportunity to integrate the transport network with the surrounding urban environment, driving regeneration across large parts of the city. The central body of the station is a monumental structure, approximately 400 metres long, that spans the tracks like a grand bridge. This configuration physically reunites the areas divided by the railway line, ensuring landscape and road network continuity.

The station spans over 30,000 square metres on four levels, seamlessly partitioning rail operations at the track bed from dedicated passenger lounges, ticket offices, and two upper commercial levels. Designed to blend into its surroundings, the building rises 8 metres above the tracks before sloping gently at its edges under a striking, 6,000-square-metre glazed and Corian-clad roof. This architectural terminal is supported by an expansive 150,000-square-metre external masterplan that integrates accessible green spaces, a 1,400-space car park with dedicated mobility bays, 53 active taxi ranks, localized 'kiss-and-ride' facilities, and a 15-bay urban and inter-city bus interchange.

Napoli Afragola stems from the need to complement Napoli Centrale station with a new hub serving the entire region, improving the efficiency and reliability of rail services and laying the foundations for the development of the surrounding area. Complementing Campania’s main station, the project serves as a genuine modal interchange hub for long-distance, regional and metropolitan traffic, strengthening Campania’s role within the national high-speed rail network.
