NEW AL FAW PORT

FS Engineering provided specialist railway engineering consultancy services for the development of the new Al Faw Grand Port in Iraq, delivering key inputs for the project's Master Plan and Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phases. The project is strategically located in the Basra Province along the Khor Abd Allah waterway, positioned near the estuary where the Tigris and Euphrates rivers meet.

The development represents a maritime infrastructure scheme of immense strategic importance, featuring over 10 km of quays, expansive cargo storage yards, and dedicated grain silos across a total footprint of 4.6 million square metres. An additional one million square metres has been allocated for highways, rail infrastructure, and integrated logistics facilities. Once fully operational, the deep-water port is engineered to manage a container throughput of up to 7 million TEU per annum, positioning itself as a world-class international logistics hub.

FS Engineering’s scope of work focused on the detailed design of the rail freight terminals serving the port. It also encompassed the operational planning and alignment of connection lines to the existing national network, ensuring seamless intermodal integration between maritime infrastructure and inland transport frameworks.

Upon final completion, the Al Faw Grand Port is set to become one of the largest port facilities in the Middle East. It serves as a cornerstone for the nation’s economic diversification and acts as the vital southern anchor for the 1,200 km Iraq-Europe 'Development Road' rail corridor.
