NATIONAL RAILWAY NETWORK

Oman’s national railway is set to be a cornerstone in the modernisation of the Sultanate’s transport and freight distribution system. The primary transport flows involve container movements between ports and intermodal hubs, raw materials transported from ports to industrial centres, and the export of raw materials and semi-finished goods to neighbouring countries across the Arabian Peninsula. 

In July 2013, FS Engineering signed a contract with the Oman Rail Company to deliver the conceptual and advanced preliminary design—including the preparation of tender documentation—for the entire railway network of the Sultanate of Oman. The new double-track mixed-traffic lines span approximately 2,244 km, linking Oman’s northern border with the United Arab Emirates and the capital, Muscat, while also connecting the southern part of the country to the ports of Duqm and Salalah, and extending to the southern border with Yemen.

The scope of work encompassed civil structures, maintenance facilities, passenger stations, and signalling and telecommunications systems, alongside the drafting of technical specifications for contractors, including rolling stock requirements.

The company also delivered the comprehensive environmental impact assessment (EIA). Furthermore, as part of the same contract and in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering at Sapienza University of Rome, it managed a two-year knowledge-transfer programme to equip young Omani engineers with specialist technical expertise.

The contract is now complete.
