"SPARK" PROJECT
King Salman Energy Park
In 2025, FS Engineering, acting as a sub-consultant to SLFE (Solution Leaders Fayez Engineering), developed the Design Criteria for the rail link between SPARK (King Salman Energy Park) and the existing EWR (East–West Railway). This work was delivered as part of the contract to prepare the Concept Design, with Saudi Aramco as the end client.
SPARK – King Salman Energy Park is a mega-industrial hub developed, managed, and operated by Saudi Aramco in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, situated between Dammam and Al Ahsa. Covering an area of approximately 50 km², it is designed as an international hub for the energy sector, integrating industrial, logistics, residential, and commercial zones. The railway project comprises an approximately 22 km mixed-traffic link for freight and passenger services between the SAR-managed EWR line and SPARK’s internal network, including the development of the SPARK Yard and Terminal. The Yard and Terminal are configured as integrated logistics facilities for handling and managing containers, solid and liquid bulk cargo, customs control zones, warehousing, workshops, operational services, internal highways, emergency access routes, and specialised systems for structure gauge enforcement and train weighing.
FS Engineering’s scope of work encompassed capturing the Employer’s Requirements, preparing Design Criteria Reports across the primary technical disciplines (alignment, permanent way, access roads, drainage, civil structures, geotechnics, the Yard, buildings, MEP, traction power supply, signalling, telecommunications, utilities, environmental impact, sand mitigation, and Fire & Life Safety), and supporting technical interface management with project stakeholders.
Overall, the assignment represented a highly specialised, strategic undertaking. It established a robust design basis for subsequent development phases and successfully managed multidisciplinary, multi-stakeholder coordination. By seamlessly integrating technical requirements, design specifications, and stakeholder needs, the team secured an optimal design outcome for a rail infrastructure asset that is central to SPARK’s logistical and industrial development.
The contract was completed in December 2025.
