FS Engineering attends RailTech Europe 2026

President Martiniello slated among the speakers

FS Engineering, the engineering company of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group, took part in RailTech Europe 2026, in Utrecht, the Netherlands, the international event dedicated to innovation, technology and railway infrastructure in Europe.

Representing the company, its President, Laura Martiniello, spoke about the strategic role of sustainability and ESG policies in the development of railway infrastructure.

During her speech, the President illustrated the vision and main lines of action with which FS Engineering is driving sustainable innovation in the design and construction of railway works, showcasing Italy’s experience to an international audience, through one of the biggest European integrated mobility players.

Ms. Martiniello highlighted how, in line with the Group strategies, FS Engineering has adopted an approach based on integrated design methods, advanced digital tools and ESG criteria, moving beyond the conventional sectoral models and embracing a holistic vision of infrastructure.
This approach makes it possible to:

  • assess the environmental and social impacts of projects from the earliest stages
  • support resilient, inclusive design focused on the quality of life of communities
  • promote the efficient use of natural resources, renewable energy and circular economy principles

The event was an opportunity to reiterate the importance of a structured governance system, in which FS Engineering adopts policies, guidelines and reporting systems that include:

  • Non-Financial Disclosures, Integrated Reporting and processes in line with the EU Taxonomy
  • guidelines for sustainable procurement
  • sustainability assessments and ratings, including Ecovadis Bronze level certification

These tools consolidate a corporate culture driven by transparency, impact measurement and continuous improvement.

FS Engineering is also committed to the development and application of innovative protocols and methodologies that support designers and stakeholders in the definition of works with high environmental, social and economic value, including:

  • Envision, to assess the sustainability of infrastructure
  • Carbon Footprint (ISO 14064), for monitoring CO₂ emissions
  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), to measure impacts throughout the entire life cycle of the project
  • Territorial Impact Assessment, a methodology developed with the FS Research Centre to assess the territorial benefits of infrastructure

During her speech, President Martiniello recalled FS Engineering's commitment to major European and international research programmes, including:

  • Horizon Europe and LIFE
  • circular economy, emissions reduction, noise mitigation, biodiversity protection projects
  • innovation projects for hydrogen storage in the railway sector
  • development of digital tools such as BIM-LCA 2.0

The company’s partnerships with universities, research centres and businesses in the sector confirm its role as a hub of expertise for sustainable engineering, promoting sustainable practices on construction sites, with a special focus on the sustainable organisation of activities; monitoring environmental impacts; disseminating best practices throughout the supply chain; and transparency and communication with the communities concerned.

Ms. Martiniello concluded by emphasising that the sustainable transition in the railway sector requires a strong commitment in terms of policies, training, technological innovation and public-private collaboration.
