FS Engineering: a step forward for mobility in northern India

Delhi–Meerut Corridor inaugurated

On Sunday 22 February 2026, the new Delhi–Meerut rail line was inaugurated, in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. This is the first corridor of Namo Bharat, India’s first Regional Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS), one of the most advanced railway infrastructure projects in northern India. This is a particularly significant milestone for FS Engineering, the engineering company of the FS Italiane Group, which has been actively involved in the project as part of a joint venture with the Spanish firm AYESA, acting as General Consultant for the Delhi–Ghaziabad–Meerut Corridor.

This marks a decisive step forward for the development of the country’s regional rapid rail system, now among the fastest in India. The new line will provide a high-performance link between Delhi and Meerut, reducing journey times to under 60 minutes. The total operational length increases from 55 to 82 kilometres, thanks to the opening of the Sarai Kale Khan station in Delhi and the Meerut South–Modipuran section. The entry into service of the corridor marks a strategic milestone for FS Engineering, confirming the importance of FS Group’s engineering contribution to major infrastructure programmes worldwide. The company, in fact, is able to support all project development stages – from design to project management – providing world-class engineering experience and proven expertise in the construction of complex, high-capacity rail systems. Designed to operate at a maximum speed of 180 km/h, and an operational speed of 160 km/h, the Delhi–Meerut Corridor is India’s first regional rapid transit system dedicated to high-speed inter-city travel. Its opening is a key step forward in transforming day-to-day mobility in the states of NCR and Uttar Pradesh, contributing to greater sustainability, efficiency and accessibility of public transport.

Besides the launch of the RRTS corridor, the Meerut MRTS metro trains have also entered service, sharing part of the same rail infrastructure, according to a unique model in India. The urban line, approximately 21 kilometres long, covers the Meerut–Modipuran route in just 30 minutes, confirming the Meerut Metro as the fastest in the country with an operating speed of around 120 km/h.

The new Sarai Kale Khan station plays a key role in the Indian capital’s intermodal transport network, thanks to its connections with the Delhi Metro, Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station and the ISBT Vir Haqiqat Rai bus terminal. The facility will also serve as a strategic hub for all corridors of the RRTS programme – Delhi–Meerut, Delhi–Panipat–Karnal and Delhi–SNB–Alwar – currently under construction. Upon completion of the system, the public transport network in the Delhi metropolitan area will extend to approximately 750 kilometres, helping to redefine the entire regional mobility planning.

With this new achievement, FS Engineering consolidates its presence in the Indian market and confirms the excellence of its engineering expertise, contributing to the development of one of the most innovative and strategic railway projects worldwide. The Company is in fact involved in numerous key projects in the country, including the design and project management of the new Rishikesh–Karanprayang railway line, which includes the Himalayan Tunnel in the state of Uttarakhand, and General Consultancy services for the metro systems in Kanpur and Agra, two key industrial hubs in northern India.

FS Engineering has also strengthened its leadership in the Mass Transit sector by securing contracts for the construction of the Mumbai Metro – Lines 2B and 7 – which opened in January 2023. The design and construction supervision of the Anji Khad Bridge stands out among the company’s most recent projects. This iconic structure spans the river of the same name, connecting Kashmir to the north-western regions of the country.

Thanks to its highly recognised specialist expertise and the use of advanced digital methodologies, FS Engineering has now confirmed itself as one of the leading international players in the field of — conventional, high-speed and metro —  road and railway engineering, decisively boosting the development of strategic infrastructure for mobility in the future.

This capability strengthens its role as a partner of excellence and a key player in the construction of major transport infrastructure projects in South Asia, consolidating its position among the global leaders in innovative digital and high-tech engineering.
