Mumbai, 17 April 2026
The first phase of Mumbai Metro Line 2B has officially been opened, marking a strategic advancement for urban mobility in one of India’s largest metropolises. The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, local officials, and key project stakeholders.
FS Engineering (FS Group), leading a consortium with Ayesa and Ceg, served as the Project Management Consultant (PMC) for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The mandate covers the extension of two vital corridors: Line 7, which began commercial service in 2023, and the newly inaugurated Line 2B.
This first phase of Line 2B spans 5.53 kilometres across an entirely elevated viaduct, connecting DN Nagar to Mandale. The section features five key stations: Deshbhakt N. G. Acharya Udyan – Diamond Garden (Chembur), Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk (Chembur), Deonar, Mankhurd, and Mandale.
The new corridor is engineered for a maximum design speed of 90 km/h, with a standard operating speed of 80 km/h. It utilizes high-automation CBTC (Communication-Based Train Control) signaling and is powered by a 25 kV AC overhead traction system.
The line features a robust telecommunications suite, integrating fiber optics, SCADA, on-board radio, and real-time passenger information systems. Stations are equipped with semi-high platform screen doors, elevators, and escalators to ensure safety and accessibility. Ticketing is fully modernized, supporting QR codes and NCMC-compliant smart cards.
The Mandale depot includes stabling and maintenance lines, test tracks and workshops, supporting a fleet of six-carriage trains with a capacity of up to 2,280 passengers per train. The infrastructure will significantly enhance urban life by alleviating road congestion and lowering carbon emissions.
Participation in the Mumbai Metro project solidifies FS Engineering’s position as a global leader in railway engineering—spanning conventional, high-speed, metro, and road infrastructure. The company remains a key architect of the strategic infrastructure shaping the future of mobility.
With over 40 years of experience and a footprint in 15 countries across five continents, thanks to thousands of highly qualified staff, FS Engineering serves as the technological core of the FS Group. By leveraging advanced BIM platforms and the end-to-end digitalization of construction sites, the company champions an integrated, sustainable approach to managing the entire infrastructure lifecycle.
