A new strategic milestone has been reached in the construction of the Terzo Valico dei Giovi project, with the breakthrough of the diaphragms of the up-line and down-line tunnels of the Novi Ligure interconnection.
This activity marks the completion of the underground excavation works of the connecting line that will link the new Genoa-Milan high-capacity railway with the historic Genoa–Turin line, enabling direct connections to and from the Piedmont regional capital. A key piece of infrastructure within the overall Terzo Valico project, fully aligned with the objectives of strengthening sustainable mobility and infrastructure development set out in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
The two natural tunnels branch off from the Serravalle tunnel (on the Terzo Valico dei Giovi line) and extend for 987 metres for the up line and 723 metres for the down line. The works were carried out at shallow depth and just a few metres away from the Genoa–Turin railway line, which remained fully operational throughout the works: in particular, the down-line tunnel passes beneath the historic line, ensuring continuity of rail services with minimal interference to traffic.
FS Engineering acts as High Supervision and Works Management Authority on behalf of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, ensuring compliance with the highest standards of safety, quality and reliability throughout all phases of the project, whose detailed design and construction works are carried out by the General Contractor COCIV.
The completion of excavation works for the Novi Ligure interconnection represents a further step forward in the delivery of the Terzo Valico dei Giovi, a strategic infrastructure for strengthening connections between Southern and North-Western Italy and for integrating the national and European logistics system.
