Orte-Falconara Line, Genga–Serra San Quirico section

Work on the line progresses with the activation of the bypass and the launching of viaduct VI02

Ancona, 13-14 June 2026

Work is proceeding on schedule on the Genga–Serra San Quirico section of the Orte-Falconara line, a strategic project for upgrading connections along the Adriatic corridor, with FS Engineering providing engineering and construction management services.

Following the recent activation of the “Cascatelle” bypass, just a few weeks ago, the temporary “Serra San Quirico” rail bypass – located at the approach to the station of the same name – successfully entered service at 3:30 a.m. on June 14, 2026. The approximately 700-meter infrastructure, constructed adjacent to the Esino River, clears the right-of-way required to complete the new double-track alignment while maintaining uninterrupted rail services during construction. This milestone underscores the effectiveness of the construction phasing, planning, and technical coordination delivered by FS Engineering.

Over the same night of June 13–14, the launching of the 70-meter steel truss span for viaduct “VI02” – designed to grade-separate the railway over National Highway 76 “della Val d’Esino” – was also completed. Executed in coordination with ANAS, the operation required a temporary 24-hour closure of the Perugia-bound carriageway, in strict compliance with safety regulations.

This milestone marks the third metal deck installation completed within just fifteen days, underscoring the rapid pace of the project; a fourth launching operation is scheduled for later this week.

Funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), the track-doubling project on the Genga-Serra San Quirico section spans approximately 9 km, constructed primarily along a new alignment relative to the existing line. The project will significantly upgrade the corridor’s performance, increasing line speed from 85 to 165 km/h and expanding overall infrastructure capacity.

The project entails the construction of six conventionally excavated tunnels totaling approximately 5 km, four viaducts spanning nearly 0.8 km, and a further 3.2 km of embankment and cutting sections. The scope of the work also includes the construction of the new Genga station and the redevelopment of the facilities serving the “Frasassi Caves” tourist destination.

These milestones confirm the value of FS Engineering’s role, which centers on the coordination of construction activities and the development of integrated engineering solutions in close collaboration with the client (the infrastructure manager RFI) and the “Infrastrutture Collegamenti Adriatica” Project Management Team.
