Milan Central Station takes another step toward digitalization: ACC Supervision System activated

The new SSA prepares the station for the future commissioning of the Computer-Based Central Interlocking System

At 4:30 a.m., the new ACC Supervision System (SSA) entered service at Milan Central Station, replacing the previous PIC-SI platform (Integrated Traffic Management Platform – Infrastructure Supervision). This activation marks a strategic milestone in the technological modernization of Milan’s railway hub and paves the way for the future commissioning of the new Computer-Based Central Interlocking System (ACC).

The project is part of the station’s broader digital transformation program, which includes the upgrade of existing infrastructure, energy, and technological systems. The ongoing activities are aimed at ensuring full compatibility between the rail yard and the future computerized command and control system, contributing to an increasingly efficient and integrated management of railway operations within the Milan node.

The new SSA represents the most advanced solution currently developed in line with railway industry standards for the supervision of large-scale railway infrastructures. Thanks to its integration into the Multi-Station Command and Control System (SCCM) of the Milan hub, the platform is already designed to accommodate the future ACC, ensuring operational continuity, enhanced reliability, and a higher level of integration in railway traffic management.

The project involved migrating the previous supervision platform to the new system while preserving the existing infrastructure architecture and ensuring full continuity of operational functions throughout all activation phases. Activities also included integration with systems already in operation, the installation of new workstations for traffic management personnel, and the adaptation of information flows supporting traffic control and track allocation management.

This achievement was made possible through the close collaboration between FS Engineering and the RFI organizational units involved in the project. This synergy enabled the successful completion of an important milestone in the technological transformation of Milan Central Station, one of the country’s main gateways to rail mobility and a strategic hub within the national railway network.

The successful activation further confirms the Company’s role in driving innovation across the national railway system, contributing to the development of advanced technological solutions for increasingly efficient, integrated, and reliable railway traffic management.
