A new milestone for the Florence High-Speed Hub marks the progress of one of the country's most significant and complex infrastructure projects. The breakthrough of the tunnel boring machines (TBMs) Iris and Marika into the vast station box of the future Florence Belfiore underground HS station has concluded the excavation of the 3km southern section of the twin single-bore through tunnels (Passante) between Campo di Marte station and the new HS station.
This major achievement was celebrated at the Florence Belfiore HS station site in the presence of the Vice President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini, the President of the Tuscany Region Eugenio Giani, the Mayor of Florence Sara Funaro, the Prefect of Florence Francesca Ferrandino, the Chief Executive Officer of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana Aldo Isi, the Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of FS Engineering Dario Lo Bosco, and the Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Infrarail Paola Firmi.
The completion of this tunnelling work represents a fundamental milestone in the delivery of the underground HS through line and the new Belfiore station. This infrastructure is set to radically transform rail operations at the Florence node and further enhance the efficiency of the entire national High-Speed corridor. By segregating HS traffic flows from regional and suburban services, the project will increase capacity, punctuality, and service quality while maintaining Florence Santa Maria Novella as the main hub for local mobility.
FS Engineering therefore confirms its leading engineering and project management role in constructing one of the most complex and challenging infrastructure projects nationwide, deploying multidisciplinary expertise across all primary project phases. The company is responsible for overall project management, construction supervision, health and safety coordination operations during execution, environmental monitoring, and compulsory purchase orders (CPOs), ensuring integrated technical oversight of the works within a highly delicate and sensitive urban environment.
Dario Lo Bosco highlighted that this result demonstrates the country's capability to design and deliver extraordinary projects through cutting-edge technology and the engineering excellence of the FS Group as a whole. This milestone was made possible by the synergy between institutions, contractors, and professionals who consistently contribute their expertise, sense of responsibility, and spirit of service to implement state-of-the-art sustainable mobility projects.
The underground through line, excavated in a heavily urbanised area featuring historic buildings and strategic infrastructure, requires advanced technology, continuous monitoring systems, and an engineering approach focused on maximum protection of the local area and existing heritage. Our Company guarantees high standards of safety, sustainability, and construction quality by coordinating technical and monitoring activities, supporting project progress every step of the way.
The completion of the tunnels confirms FS Engineering's capability to lead and oversee highly complex infrastructure projects by integrating specialist expertise, technological innovation, and sensitivity towards local needs. It once again demonstrates the central role of the FS Group’s engineering arm in developing major strategic national works and its concrete contribution to delivering modern, sustainable infrastructure capable of improving the country's connectivity and competitiveness.
