FS Engineering Supporting the New Verona-Vicenza High-Speed/High-Capacity Railway Line

Connections with the existing network commissioned, marking a key step towards trial runs

A significant new milestone has been achieved in the development of the Verona-Vicenza High-Speed/High-Capacity (HS/HC) railway line. On 17 August, the Verona Porta Vescovo and Bivio Olmo systems were commissioned and handed over to RFI’s Territorial Infrastructure Operations Directorate (DOIT) in Verona. These strategic infrastructures will enable the connection of the new railway axis to the existing conventional line.

The intervention involved the commissioning of approximately 4 kilometres of new railway alignment, including civil works, track infrastructure and technological systems. The works were carried out during a complex operational phase requiring continuous activities across multiple day and night shifts. The operation took advantage of a scheduled railway traffic interruption on the Verona-Vicenza section between 2 and 17 August.

The simultaneous activation of the two junctions represents a crucial step forward for the project and will allow the start of the trial runs required for line certification by ANSFISA, a prerequisite for the commercial operation of the new railway connection.

In this context, FS Engineering played a pivotal role, acting as Construction Supervision and Works Management Authority within the General Contractor contract framework. Through continuous coordination, monitoring, verification and certification activities, carried out both on site and through rigorous project management processes, the company made a significant contribution to the achievement of this milestone, ensuring oversight of all implementation phases.

The Verona-Bivio Vicenza section, designed for a maximum operating speed of 250 km/h, powered by a 3 kV DC electrification system and equipped with ERTMS Level 2 signalling technology, is one of the key projects for completing the Milan-Venice HS/HC railway corridor. The infrastructure also represents a strategic component of the TEN-T Mediterranean Corridor, the European transport axis connecting south-western European countries with eastern Europe.

The project includes the quadrupling of the existing railway line over more than 44 kilometres, together with the upgrading of approximately 7 kilometres of the historic railway route, helping to increase network capacity, improve service reliability and strengthen the integration of the Italian railway system into the main European transport corridors.

The commissioning of the two junctions at the boundaries of the section also ensures the full functionality of the infrastructure independently of the completion of the subsequent works planned under the Verona East HS/HC Node and the Second Functional Lot of the Vicenza Rail Crossing. This achievement further confirms the strategic value of the project and the contribution of FS Engineering to the development of an increasingly modern, efficient and sustainable mobility system.
