On Italian High-Speed/High-Capacity (HS/HC) routes, the network is electrified using the 2×25 kV AC system. These electrical traction installations are engineered to meet the demanding performance requirements of high-speed rail, where trains operate at speeds up to 300 km/h, draw pantograph power loads of up to 12 MW, and run at traffic frequencies of up to one train every 5 minutes. Each traction substation is capable of powering substantial route sections, averaging 50 km in length.
On conventional 3 kV DC lines, the substations serve as the primary conversion and distribution points feeding power to the contact lines, ensuring a reliable supply to various line sections and station hubs. Their configuration, which relies on multiple feeders, robust protection systems, and supervisory remote control, allows for highly flexible operational management. This framework guarantees service continuity even during traction system faults or network disruptions.
