DIGITALISING THE CONSTRUCTION SITE

The digitalisation of the construction site is at the heart of our strategy to transform construction activities into processes that are increasingly productive, safe, sustainable and quality-oriented. Through the adoption of advanced digital information management methods and tools, we promote an operational model anchored in efficiency and continuous improvement throughout all phases of project delivery.

As part of our site supervision and management activities, we have introduced a digital approach that significantly enhances the verification of construction projects, streamlining the management of technical changes and variations on-site. This model also ensures integrated, real-time control over quality, safety, and environmental impacts, while enabling faster, more accurate monitoring of works progress and site accounting, thereby significantly minimising the margin for error.

The use of collaborative platforms and Common Data Environments (CDEs) – accessible via mobile devices directly in the field – makes these digital workflows fully operational. The immediate, shared availability of information facilitates smoother, more transparent, and efficient site management, improving coordination among all delivery parties and stakeholders.

DIGITAL SIMULATION AND ADVANCED SITE MONITORING

FS Engineering employs advanced digital tools for simulating the construction site and the construction phases, using 4D information models capable of integrating project geometry with work schedule. This approach optimises operational planning, the timely identification of conflicts, and the prevention of risks and errors during construction.

5D information models also enable integrated monitoring of the physical and financial progress of construction works, thanks to the regular updating of quantities and costs. Their use promotes more transparent and efficient financial management of the construction site, reducing the risk of discrepancies between design and construction.

To support verification activities, three-dimensional surveys of works in progress are carried out, also by means of drones, which are subsequently compared with the project BIM models. These surveys make it possible to verify the progress made, the quality of the workmanship, and compliance with the timetable. Checks can be carried out directly on the digital model, minimising the need for further site inspections, with tangible benefits in terms of time, cost and safety.

Finally, digital scans of the construction site, carried out using the latest data acquisition technology, enable the quick and accurate comparison between the BIM model and the progress made. This information, which can also be accessed remotely, supports the site team in monitoring the quantity and quality of the built works, allowing for prompt action in the event of deviations.

DRONES, DIGITAL CONSTRUCTION SITES AND CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

Between 2023 and 2026, FS Engineering developed and consolidated an advanced approach to works management on infrastructure construction sites by systematically introducing innovative digital technology, in particular, the use of UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) systems and reality capture technology for enhanced work control, monitoring and management.

The use of drones is a key feature in the evolution of the ‘digital construction site’ model, enabling significant steps forward in operational safety, technical control of works, and site supervision efficiency, especially in the case of rail projects, which are highly complex infrastructure.
